Silk thread is a natural, non-absorbable, multifilament surgical suture derived from silkworm cocoons. Highly valued for its exceptional handling and knot security, it is frequently used in veterinary procedures for general soft tissue approximation, vessel ligation, and securing drains.

Specs & features.
Surgical silk is a processed protein fiber (fibroin) spun by the domesticated silkworm (Bombyx mori). The natural gums and waxes are removed, and the fibers are braided into a multifilament thread. To reduce tissue drag and minimize capillarity (the wicking of fluids), the thread is often coated with silicone or wax. It is usually dyed black for optimal visibility against tissue.

- Excellent Handling & Pliability: It is highly flexible, lacks memory, and drapes softly, making it one of the easiest sutures to manipulate.
- Superior Knot Security: It holds knots exceptionally well without unravelling, reducing the risk of knot slippage compared to synthetic sutures like Vicryl.
- Degradation Profile: Although classified as non-absorbable by the USP, silk naturally breaks down via enzymatic degradation. It loses its tensile strength over several months and is typically fully absorbed within 1 to 2 years.
