Specs & features.

Developed originally by Raymond Sabouraud in 1892, SDA is primarily designed to cultivate fungi associated with skin, hair, and nail infections in animals (dermatophytosis). It provides a nutrient-rich environment that supports robust fungal growth while intentionally inhibiting competing bacterial flora.

No specifications have been listed.

  • Optimized pH: The medium is traditionally adjusted to an acidic pH of approximately 5.6 ± 0.2 at 25°C. This acidic environment naturally restricts the growth of most bacteria, allowing veterinary samples to be screened for fungi without overgrowth.
  • High Carbohydrate Content: Contains a high concentration of dextrose (usually 40 g/L), which acts as the primary carbon and energy source for rapid fungal proliferation, pigment production, and spore formation.
  • Nitrogen Source: Contains specialized peptones (such as enzymatic digest of casein) to supply essential nitrogen, amino acids, and vitamins.
