Specs & features.

Also known as Basic Red 2 or Safranin O, this chemical reagent is a planar, azine-based cationic dye that intercalates easily into cellular macromolecules. In 125 ml volumes, it is typically prepared as a ready-to-use liquid reagent in either water or alcohol and is widely utilized in veterinary diagnostics to provide strong visual contrast to transparent microscopic structures

  • Gram Staining Counterstain: In bacteriology, Safranin acts as the final step in the classic Gram staining method. Following decolorization, it stains Gram-negative bacteria pink or red, allowing clinicians to easily differentiate them from Gram-positive bacteria (which retain the primary crystal violet and appear deep purple).
  • Tissue and Cartilage Assessment: In veterinary pathology, Safranin O is the stain of choice to evaluate cartilaginous tissue structural integrity. It specifically binds to glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) and acidic proteoglycans, staining joint cartilage an intense red.
  • Cytology and Parasite Detection: Formulations like the Sternheimer-Malbin stain (where Safranin is a component) are used in urine sediment analysis to reveal ova, casts, and epithelial cells to assist in diagnosing bladder worms and other infections.
