Bromothymol blue (BTB) functions by detecting localized pH changes in biological fluids. Normal, healthy bovine milk has a slightly acidic to neutral pH (about 6.5 to 6.8). However, when an udder is inflamed due to mastitis, blood capillaries become more permeable, allowing alkaline blood constituents (like sodium and bicarbonate ions) to seep into the milk. This raises the pH of the milk above 7.0.
